Spin-off programs

The current program version is 2.9.8.5, available for downloading from 2008-09-04.

Changes with 2.9.8.5:

• Supporting the Canon 1DMarkIIN native raw files.
• Adding two more steps to the intensity adjustments; thus the adjustment allows for 1/6 EV steps over the entire range.

Changes with 2.9.8.4:

• Supporting the Canon 450D native raw files with the name Digital X2.

• Supporting the Nikon D700 native raw files (filename extention NEF).
  Due to the lack of respective raw file samples not all combinations of bit depth, compressions and sizes have been tested. In case of any problem pls upload the raw file and notify .

Changes with 2.9.7.0:

• Supporting the Pentax K10D and K100D native raw files (filename extention PEF).
• The saturation level of Canon 30D was assumed to be 4095. That was incorrect; the conseqnence was, that raw clipping has never been indicated by Rawnalyze. Now it is changed to 3398.
• ISO values between full stops are now displayed correctly with Nikon native raw files.
• Some tiny enhancements and corrections.

Changes with 2.9.6.0:

• Correcting the error, which caused the message Erros in the JPEG compression data: excess tile/strip data appear with Canon CR2 files.

  The program copy in error was awailable for downloading from 2008-05-07 afternoon to 2008-05-08 morning, Pacific DST.

  I apologize for the trouble to those, who downloaded the program in this time frame.

Changes with 2.9.3.0:

• Explicite white balance setting in a subdialog, started by pressing Alt-Ctrl-W. Up to five WB settings can be created, saved and activated . Saving and recalling is possible through keyboard shortcuts, like in the former versions, saving by Ctrl-Shift-1 (or 2, 3, 4, 5), activating by Ctrl-1 (or 2, 3, 4, 5).
• Initial black point with Pentax K10 corrected.

Changes with 2.9.2.0:

• The black point and/or white point can be increased/descreased by 500 through the key combination Alt-Control and an arrow key, analogous to the other adjustments with Ctrl or Ctrl-Shift combined with an arrow key (this is useful in fine histogram mode),
• the edit boxes for black point and white point have been increased to prevent truncation,
• Nikon raw files updated by Nikon Capture violate some TIFF rules and have been rejected by Rawnalyze; now these files are accepted.

Changes with 2.9.1.0:

• Support of the Nikon D40X camera is added.

Changes with 2.9.0.0:

• Diverse changes to the fine histogram.
• The black level correction algorythm has been changed. This effects only Canon cameras at the moment.
• The standard deviation of the RGB values in the selection stats is displayed now with one decimal after the point.
• Finally, an About box with with proper version number can be tickled out by right-clicking on the title bar (the top of the window).

Changes with 2.8.9.0:

• Fine/zoomed histogram can be selected by a checkbox. A block of 512 pixel values is displayed in the 512 column wide histogram; consequently every pixel value has its own representation.

  The range of the pixel value block starts at the current black point; if the black point is changed, the histogram gets recalculated.

  The hight of the columns represent the number of pixels swith the respective value relative to all pixels of that color in the displayed range (on a logarythmic scale, as described in the user's guide). As the range is shifted by changing the black point, the number of pixels of any color within the range changes, therefor the shape of the histogram changes by shifting it.

• Selection in exposure display mode was not possible when zoomed it. Now it is possible.
• The handling of black levels in Sony A700 images has been changed.

Changes with 2.8.8.0:

• Command line parameters are now accepted. This means, that the program can be started from Windows Explorer by right-clicking on the file name and selecting the appropriate action; however, this has to be established in Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types.

  The first parameter (following the program name itself) is the name of the raw file to process, the second parameter is the processiong option: a slash or hyphen followed by the letter i for color image display, e for exposure display, n for channel related image display, b for black and white image display or h for histogram display.

  Example:
  "H:\RawProc\Release\Rawnalyze.exe" %1 -i

  Windows Explorer replaces %1 with the file name and starts the program for color image display.

• In addition to the reduced size display mode, up to ten times zooming is available through hitting the "+" (plus) key repeatedly. Zooming out occurs by hitting the "-" (minus) key. The key combination Alt+Ctrl+0 resets the display to normal mode.

  Selection is possible at all zooming states, but the selection gets erased when changing the zooming.

• The handling of white clipping has been redesigned, though most users won't notice it.
• The font of the text displays has been changed, because the text sometimes overflowed at certain display settings. Hopefully the new font (Times New Roman, instead of Microsoft Sans Serif) will not be too small with some other settings.

The manual will be updated soon.

Anyone using an older version of the program should download this one, which has new features and in which some errors of the previous version have been corrected.
The version of the downloaded program can be verified in Windows Explorer, by right-clicking on the program name, selecting Properties and then Version.

Compressed or uncompressed DNG files of most cameras are accepted. If anyone encounters an error with the processing of a DNG file, please upload that file to your site or to yousendit.com and send to a description of the problem with a link to the file causing the problem.

More cameras' native raw files will be supported in the future.

Anyway, Rawnalyze is a computer program for the support of detailed analysis of raw images created by digital cameras.

Requirements, Conditions

• Computer and software requirements:
  • Windows 98 and above. It is not tested on Vista; difficulties are not expected, but they can never be excluded,
  • computers with "least significant byte first" architecture (also known as "little endian" or "Intel architecture", as opposed to "Motorola architecture").
• Images accepted by Rawnalyze:
  • only raw images (no JPEG, no PSD, no BMP, no GIF, etc.),
  • raw images of unsupported formats, or with unsupported compression have to be converted in "Digital Negative" format; this can be done by Adobe's DNG Converter. Information on this program is at Adobe's Digital Negative site. The DNG converter can be downloaded here, free of charge,
  • DNG files can be uncompressed or uncompressed,
  • the sensor has to be Bayer type, rectangular layout color filter array with three colors (like all Canon, Nikon, etc.). Neither Foevon, nor Sony's RGBE (four color sensor), nor staggered color filter arrays are supported.
    Furthermore, intermediate formats, like Canon's sRGB and Kodak's small raw versions (originally Bayer mosaiced data, but now de-mosaiced) are not supported either.

Caveats

• The histogram range of some cameras and/or ISO settings may not be correct. The histogram is relative to the possible range of pixel values, which depends not only on the bit depth but on the camera model and on the ISO as well. For example the Canon 40D's maximam pixel values (the clipping points) depend on the actual ISO. This is accounted for with those cameras, for which the relevant data is available.
  
  However, this data has not been evaluated yet for the Canon 1D Mark III and the Canon 1Ds Mark III, as well as the Nikon D2X, Nikon D300 and Nikon D3. Some shots created specifically to this purpuse would be required for the calibration; if someone is prepared to do that, please email to .
• The Dust Delete Data feature of some Canon cameras is not supported yet.
• The sRaw images of some Canon cameras are not accepted.

Downloading the program

Installation

A shortcut can be created by right-clicking on the program file in Windows Explorer. This shortcut can be moved to the desktop, to the task bar or to a folder of the Start Menu (the location of the latter depends on the Windows version).
When right-clicking on the shortcut and selecting Properties, a dialog appears. In that dialog one can specify the folder, which contains raw files to be analyzed; opening a raw file will be easier this way.

Note, that the program does not create any Windows registry records, nor does it carry out any communications whatsoever, like registering or reporting the usage.

Detailed description of the features with screen captures are in the Rawnalyze User's Guide. In order to reduce the downloading, the guide is subdivided into five HTML files; however, there is a complete version, Rawnalyze User's Guide All. This takes longer downloading, but it can be saved as an HTML file with the images (select "Webpage complete" in Internet Explorer, when saving it), or as a single file in MHTM format.

If the guide is stored in the same folder, where the program file is kept, then it will be displayed when clicking on the Help button in the Rawnalyze dialog. If neither the HTML nor the MHTM version is stored in that folder with the name RawnalyzeGuideAll.htm respectively RawnalyzeGuideAll.mht, then the Help function displays the guide from the Rawnalyze Internet site.

Current spin-off programs

Certain version(s) of Nikon Capture NX, at least version 1.3.0 and 2.0.0 are creating an erroneous file when updating a NEF. Some programs don't have problem with processing a file with that particular error, but others reject the file.

Capture NX Version 2.0.0 adds another, though less important error: the DateTime field is overlong, and the content is garbled from the seconds. This is the date and time of processing by Capture X; the date and time of shooting the image is intact.

The Windows-only program CNXCORR1 corrects the error by updating the file (the garbled seconds get replaced by "00").
It is a command line application started from a DOS windows, with the file name as the only parameter (including path if necessary). CNXCORR1 issues messages relating the file status; if these particular errors do not occur in the specified file, a message indicates this, and no update takes place.
